Chaminade 77, Virginia 72

December 23, 1982.  3,500 fans at the Blaisdell Arena witnessed what is considered the biggest upset in college basketball history - NAIA Chaminade Silverswords defeated the No.1 ranked Division I Virginia Cavaliers, 77 to 72.

  • Chaminade head coach, Merv Lopes, was paid $2,000 for the entire season with a recruiting budget of $34
  • Chaminade College was to be renamed the University of Honolulu days after the game, but school officials kept the name after all the national attention it received.
